The shift towards environmentally friendly, cleaner, and healthier coatings has fueled the growth of waterborne coatings over recent decades. Consumers, professional painters, and regulators are more aware of issues related to VOC, SVOC, and label compliance in architectural and industrial domains. Adherence to substrates is critical, but many formulators encounter adhesion problems, necessitating the use of adhesion promoters to avoid reworking formulations.

Addibond™ 106, designed by Syensqo, is a new adhesion promoter for waterborne coatings formulations, aimed at enhancing dry and wet adhesion for metal coatings. This product is notable for its user-friendliness, ease of incorporation at any formulation stage, and low dosage. Its compatibility with diverse resins such as acrylic, PUD, and epoxy is an added advantage.
As sustainability drives coatings applications, this adhesion promoter offers significant benefits like durability (improved adhesion reduces the frequency of recoating), is Ecolabel compliant with very low VOC and SVOC content, and is suitable for architectural and industrial coa-tings, particularly in C1/C2 corrosion resistance classes.

Improvement of adhesion on metal substrate – Galvanized substrate (Gardobond OE HDG)
Formulation Tested: Mid PVC DTM acrylic formulation with an acrylic binder having MFFT>30° C.
Incorporation: Addibond™ 106 added post-formulation at 0.25% of active content ( 0.6% as supplied).
Protocol: ISO 2409. Materials: Adhesive tape 7.5 N/cm, folding ruler, cutter.
Results: revealed that integrating this additive at 0.25% active greatly enhances dry adhesion on galvanized steel after 24 hours of drying
Extended testing: 7 Days Drying at 23° C, 50% HR: Both dry and wet adhesion were assessed.
Results: demonstrated that the product significantly boosts both dry and wet adhesion on galvanized steel at low dosages. Similar improvements were observed for CRS and Aluminum substrates when 0.25% active Addibond™ 106 was added in the formulation.
Addibond™ 106 emerges as an effective adhesion promoter for waterborne coatings formulations, ideal for architectural and light-duty applications. It offers ease of use, broad resin compatibility, and superior adhesion, highlighting its value as a sustainable solution in modern coatings.
